Please help! I am so confused about dog food?

I am getting a sheltie puppy in a couple of weeks. He will be almost 4 months old. I have been doing all kinds of research on what to feed him. I want to make sure I’m giving the best diet possible. I have been hearing that protein is very good, but not too much. I was thinking about feeding Innova Evo, but reading on blogs that people have been having alot of problems with it. I have also been on the dog food analysis website and they rate Innova very highly recommended. I was also wondering, if too much protein is not good, then how is raw diet good? Ok, I’m very confused, if you know about this subject, please help. The breeder feeds the puppy Orijen and Pedigree healthy vitality.

In my opinion, EVO has too much protein for puppies. It is better suited for adult dogs. The regular Innova puppy food is a very good choice though!

Go with a high-quality puppy or all-life-stages food.

Some of my favorites are:
* Merrick Puppy Plate
* Wellness Just for Puppy
* Innova Puppy
* Canidae All-life-states
* Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover’s Soul

Or if you’re shopping at Petsmart/Petco:
* Blue Buffalo
* Natural Balance
* Castor & Pollux
* Solid Gold

Below the double line is my general advice on choosing dog foods.

Read the ingredients before you buy.

Here is my “short list” of rules when I am looking at dog food ingredients:
1) When I chose a dog food, I chose one high meat content. I want to see preferably at least 2-3 out of the top 5 ingredients be meat or meat meal (first ingredient must be!). Meal is simply the meat with the moisture removed.
2) I want to see higher quality grains, such as barley, brown rice, and oatmeal, instead of seeing wheat and corn. Or an alternative starch/carbohydrate such as potatoes or sweet potatoes.
3) I don’t want to see any byproducts.
4) I don’t want to see a lot of fillers.
5) I don’t want to see preservatives that are believed to be carcinogens (BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin).
6) I don’t want to see artificial colorings such as the Red, Blue, and Yellow dyes.
7) I don’t want to see added sugars (sugar, corn syrup).
8) I don’t want to see mystery meats (meats identified only as “meat” or “poultry”.)

Here is an article about byproducts:

And an article on what ingredients to avoid:

There is no food that is the *best*, different individual dog may thrive on different foods. What is best for one may not be the best for the next. And just because a food is good quality, it doesn’t mean it will jive the best for your dog.

What you want to find is the HIGH-QUALITY food that *your dog* does best on.

Here are some examples of GOOD dog foods:
* Artemis
* Blue Buffalo
* California Natural
* Canidae
* Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul
* Eagle Pack Holistic Selects
* EVO
* Fromm
* Innova
* Merrick
* Nature’s Variety
* Orijen
* Solid Gold
* Taste of the Wild
* Wellness
* ZiwiPeak

Or check this website; the 4, 5, or 6 star rated foods are all good foods. http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/

(For puppies, I recommend staying in the 4 & 5 star foods, the 6 star foods have protein levels very high for puppies.)

Higher quality food may seem more expensive at first, but it evens out. The higher quality the food, the less fillers eaten (and therefore the less poop comes out the other end). Your dog eats more of a low-quality food to try to get the nutrition it needs, and most of the food just passes right on through. Also, higher-quality food will make your animals healthier, so you save money on vet bills in the long run.

What *NOT* to buy:

Stay away from grocery stores brands. They are low-quality foods chalk full of fillers, preservatives, dyes, etc.. (Grocery store foods are those like Beneful, Old Roy, Alpo, Pedigree, Purina, etc.)

Beware “premium” foods. “Premium” does not always mean good nutritionally, and is not a nutritionally high quality food. Most of these foods have the same types of ingredients as grocery store foods, just a bit better quality of those not-so-good ingredients. (Premium foods are those like Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Bil-Jac, Royal Canin, etc..)

Another thing to be wary of: A lot of vets will recommend what they sell in their office. They get profit from the brands they keep on their shelves, that’s why they push it. Truth is, vet schools don’t focus a lot on nutrition. It’s not saying that a vet is a bad vet because he recommends those foods, a lot of vets just are told “this is good food”, so they pass the message along without proper nutrition knowledge. Also, some dog food brands (like Hills) support vet schools, so vets have heard of it from the time they start college, which makes them think it’s good as well.

Hills company, the makers of Science Diet, are heavily involved in vet schools. “Hill’s scientists author more than 50 research papers and textbook chapters each year and teach at leading schools of veterinary medicine” (Source of quoted section: http://www.hillsvet.com/zSkin_2/company_info/company_info_general.jsp?JSESSIONID=HMz2B3Jn3hv0rnSoxCobfbBhOec35ODG7yh5t3P0vcvhOtzRlQ9M!598359213!167846923!7005!8005&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302026072&bmUID=1196192566575 )

“Big box” petstores like Petco and Petsmart rarely have quality foods. (I do believe that PetCo sells “Solid Gold” and “Natural Balance” brands and Petsmart sells “Blue Buffallo”, which are all higher quality foods, but most of the foods aren’t.)

Also, grocery stores and Walmart aren’t good places to buy food either.

Your best bets for getting quality dog food are:
- small, locally owned petstores
- dog boutiques
- farm supply stores

When switching foods, do it gradually. I do this over about a two week timespan:
25% food A, 75% food B
50% food A, 50% food B
75% food A, 25% food B
100% food A
.

no deli meat during pregnancy?

I just recently found out i am pregnant, I’ve been searching online and researching about nutrition and things i should be eating. I found a site that listed things i could definitely not eat.. these items included or course no brainers like raw egg and raw or undercooked meats, unpasteurized milk and milk products But it also said to avoid processed meats like hot dogs and deli-meats unless well cooked. What do they mean by deli meat? does this mean like lunch meat? If so what the heck do i put on my sandwich?!
thanks for telling me, I guess even if it is afe it can’t hurt, YUM! fried ham sandwiches

Yes. Lunch meat. It is because it can contain listeria. If you want to have a sandwich heat up the meat until it is steaming hot. This will kill the listeria in it. Pregnant women are 20 times more susceptible to getting listeria than non-pregnant women. Good luck to you!

Home Based Business: Let Me Tell You A Secret On How To Make Money From Home

More and more people are starting their home based business to make money. Some have done so well that they work full time on their home based business, thus allowing them the freedom and flexibility which does not come with a regular nine to five job. More and more people are internet savvy nowadays compared to ten years ago. The internet has enabled people to make money online. Nowadays, it is very common for people to search for anything they want online and purchase it online. This saves them the hassle of having to hunt high and low for the product or service they want. You can literally search the world for anything you need, with the internet. Yes, think about this. The internet is filled with people willing to part with money for goods and services they want. They may for example, require a dog groomer, or need to buy dog food for their pet. If you are a service provider or an online retailer who can satisfy this need, then you will be able to make money online. Want to capture this big, cash rich online market? The beauty of starting a home based business online is that you can provide any service you want, or create and sell anything that is in demand. Moreover, the start up cost of a home based business is very small, taking into account that you do not need to pay for massive shop rent, warehousing costs or office costs. What you need to do is to research what type of product or services is in demand. Check out internet forums, browse your local bookstore to see what magazine titles are in demand. This will give you an idea which niche is popular. From there, you can zoom in on a specific type of product or service for that niche. For example, you may notice that there are many pet related magazines in your local bookstore. So catering to pet’s needs is a niche you may want to consider as there are so many animal lovers out there. Then you may notice that animal lovers in your area pamper their pets like their own children. You may want to develop spa products for animals, to tap into this lucrative market. Once you have decided on the niche you want to promote, you may want to set up your website to promote your shop online. With increased awareness online, you are able to use the internet to distribute your products. However, the downside of an internet business that promotes your own physical products or services is limited to what you can do. You cannot leverage on the effort of others to make money for you. As such, I highly recommend that you venture into internet marketing. Specifically, affiliate marketing since this does not require you to come up with your own products. You get paid commission by your affiliate merchants once your list of subscribers buy from them. So as a new internet marketer, you focus your efforts on building your list and driving traffic to your affiliate merchants.

Leaving my dog for college?

I’m currently a senior in high school and I’m leaving for college in the fall. I have a female Pomeranian who’s almost 4 years old. I’m only going to be 2 hours away so I plan to visit at least once a month but I just get really upset thinking about leaving her.

My mom works most of the day and sometimes late at night, so my Dad would be the main person taking care of her. He doesn’t really like her because she sheds a lot and is always hyper and running around, and I know he won’t give her the attention that I do. I LOVE my dog, she’s like my baby and I just hate knowing that I’m basically going to abandon her. She doesn’t have any health issues, but I’d never be able to forgive myself if something happened to her while I was gone.

Has anybody been in this kind of situation before? Any advice?
@Lindsay B: I’m dorming at the college, the only pets they allow are fish.

Aw, it’s going to suck when you hear this. You will have to deal with it :-( and do not let yourself think of the worst cos it’s not going to help you at all. Look on the bright side, you’re going to be two hours away from her! That’s way better than 10 hours away from her. When you come home, spend the day with her! :-) You’ll be fine so will she :-)

Nutritious Canine Meals Food Plan – Choosing Healthy Pet Food For Your Dog

In a time when more and more pet owners are concerned about what they’re feeding their pets, finding a nutritious pet food may be pretty complicated. Lots of products on the market declare to offer full and balanced vitamin on your pet, but in many cases, this is just a advertising term used to promote the product. Unfortunately, such labeling doesn’t mean that every meals is equally good to your canine, fairly that the odds of protein, fiber, fat, and moisture meet the minimal standards. While any food your feed your canine ought to have this sort of labeling, that is not all there may be with regards to nutritious dog food. Whenever you determine what the best food is, you have to start with the label.

First, rule out the least costly manufacturers in the store. It is not that you have to break the financial institution to purchase a great dog food, but that low-cost foods use cheap ingredients. The lowest price canine meals on the market will use a whole lot of fillers and low quality components, making them a lower worth, regardless that they do not value quite a bit per bag. A nutritious pet food might be more expensive than a grocery retailer model in most cases.

Secondly, pet house owners need to study to learn pet food labels. Keep away from meals which have quite a lot of corn, soy, or wheat, particularly if they’re high on the components list. These are very low cost sources of plant protein, that are hard to digest for dogs. They have been linked to quite a lot of health issues, like colitis and urinary tract infections. In fact, dry pet food all the time accommodates some amount of grain. Nevertheless, choose a nutritious pet food that features grain additional down the record and makes use of ingredients like brown rice, barley, oats, or other straightforward to digest choices. Some foods also embody potatoes.

The bulk of any nutritious pet food should come from animal sources, since dogs are naturally meat eaters. Avoid cheap filler elements like meals and by products, which might come from already stripped animal carcasses. Additionally, for those who see a generic time period akin to ‘poultry’, ‘fish’, or ‘meat’, avoid that meals in favor of one that names the kind of meat used. Whole, named meats are essentially the most desirable, and will come first on the listing of most nutritious canine foods.

Colorants and other components are also problematic. They’re in many alternative pet food brands, however they’re only there to make the product appeal extra to the human who’s shopping for the food. Search for a food that features as few preservatives, artificial flavoring brokers and coloring agents as possible. These chemical compounds may cause allergic reactions in some dogs, and are undesirable in a nutritious canine food. Whereas there are good foods on the market, you might have to do a little analysis to search out them. Nevertheless, if you happen to care about your dog’s health, it’ll be worth it within the end. A nutritious pet food will make your dog happier, really feel better, and stay longer.

Summer Travel With Your Dog

With pet-friendly hotels, cabins, and resort spots popping up all over the map, traveling with your best friend has never been easier. But while jetting off without planning in advance sounds romantic, it can cause sticky situations if your dog is along for the ride.

Practice First

In any endeavor, practice makes perfect. Your angel of a dog could turn into a devil in transit if you embark on a lengthy trip without preparing properly. But with a little advance work, you can help your pup learn to take travel in stride.

  • Acclimate your dog to his pet carrier or dog crate. Set the carrier up in the comfort of home well in advance, to help your dog view it as a safe and familiar den that’s just his. Be sure the carrier’s big enough so your dog can stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably.
  • Stick to day trips at first. This is especially helpful for a puppy who hasn’t been away from home much. A Saturday visit to an unfamiliar locale can help your dog get used to exploring new terrain and meeting new people.
  • Try an overnight trip next. Once he’s used to short journeys, arrange to spend a night with a friend or relative, or go to a pet-friendly hotel. This will introduce your dog to a variety of potentially anxiety-producing situations, such as sleeping in a new place, meeting strangers, and dealing with the odd noises of a different household or a hotel.

Prepare your dog for a lengthy trip

Whether you’re setting out via plane, ship, or automobile, take these steps first to prevent problems while you and your dog are away from home:

1. See your veterinarian. Make sure your dog is in good health, is up-to-date on shots, and has enough of any needed medications for the trip. Depending on the destination, the vet may suggest additional vaccinations. For example, if travel involves hiking in the woods, the vet could advise a shot for Lyme disease.

2. Get a health certificate from your vet. This verifies that your dog’s in good condition, and it may be required by some airlines, hotels, or doggie daycare locations in other cities.

3. Talk to the vet about sedatives. These are most important if your pet has had travel anxiety in the past, but you may choose to use them as a precautionary measure. However, your vet may advise against them for airplane travel.

4. Try any new sedatives or medications before you leave. Check to see if your dog has any allergic reactions that require a vet visit.

5. Ask your vet about a microchip. If your dog doesn’t have one already, you may want one as a safeguard against losing him permanently in an unfamiliar place.

6. Know the rules at your destination. For instance, to bring a dog across the border to Mexico, the health certificate must be dated within two weeks of the travel date. Most such certificates will remain valid for 30 days, to cover bringing the dog back into the U.S. at the end of your trip.

7. Research dog-walking routes in advance. Remember, dogs are creatures of routine, and yours will need that daily walk no matter where your vacation spot is–plus he’ll enjoy the adventure of new outings.

Bottom line: Pet-friendly accommodations make it possible to travel widely with your dog–but regulations and requirements mean it’s crucial to plan all the details first.
