7 Food Additives You Need to Avoid

Food additives are used to make food appear fresher, more delectable, and longer lasting. In the US, about 3,000 substances can be added by manufacturers to their products in order to help enhance food flavor, increase shelf life, and improve the texture and color of their food products. Although most of these substances are safe, there are some items that you need to look out for.

The best way to ensure that you are not consuming unhealthy additives is by eating and consuming only fresh and whole foods. However if you cannot help introducing some processed food in your everyday diet, just make sure that you stay away from products that contain dangerous food additives. Here are seven of the most unhealthful substances that you need to avoid and exclude from the list of ingredients in the food that you eat or feed your family.

BHA and BHT

Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) are used to make sure fats don’t go rancid immediately. These substances are quite common ingredients in cereals, vegetable oil, chewing gum, and chips. Some studies show that BHA and BHT cause cancer in rats. According to World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, BHA could cause cancer in humans. In fact, BHA is labeled as a carcinogen in the State of California.

Aspartame

One artificial sweetener that is used in diet sodas and other low-cal products is aspartame. In the 70′s, several studies have already shown that aspartame can cause brain tumors in rats. In 2005, another study has confirmed that even just a small amount of this substance can increase the risk of developing brain tumors as well as leukemia and lymphomas in rats. Some people also experience dizziness, headaches and hallucination after taking food that is loaded with aspartame.

Acesulfame-K

Another artificial sweetener that you should avoid is acesulfame-K, which is considered to be sweeter than sugar by as much as 200 times. It is common to find this ingredient in baked goodies, gelatin, chewing gum, and sodas. Some studies have shown that this substance can also cause cancers in rats. To date, a clinical study to confirm its safety in humans is yet to be conducted.

Potassium Bromate

Although potassium bromate, which is used in breads, cakes, doughnuts and rolls, can still be used in Japan and the US, it is actually banned in other parts of the world because of its cancerous threat. The Center for Science in the Public Interest is actually asking the US Food and Drug Administration to ban the use of potassium bromate because clinical research found that it can cause cancer in rats.

Sodium Nitrate

The ingredient used to preserve, add color and flavor bacon, hot dogs, corned beef and other processed or cured meats is sodium nitrate. Many studies have shown that this food additive is responsible for the development of nitrosamines, which have been confirmed to cause cancer. Research shows that there is a direct link between cancer in humans and the immoderate consumption of food containing sodium nitrate.

Red # 3

A popular coloring included in candies, baked goods and cherries is the red # 3 dye. Experts believe that this can increase risk for thyroid tumors in rats as well as in humans. Presently, the FDA is looking at completely banning the use of this red dye. In the meantime, just be on guard for baked and processed foods that contain this ingredient.

Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil

Many canned goods, potato chips, baked goods and many other foods available in the market contain hydrogenated vegetable oil, which is responsible for creating trans fat. According to the Institute of Medicine, consumers should stay away from food that contains trans fat because it elevates risk for diabetes and other heart problems.

If you have been consuming food with the above ingredients all these years, you can go into a detoxification program to get rid of all the toxins that these food additives may have accumulated in your body. Drinking plenty of water and eating mostly fruits and vegetables are good ways to flush out toxins from your system. You can also make use of internal cleansing products like Colpurin to help clean your gut and other internal organs from wastes and toxins created by the above mentioned food additives. Will a homemade diet of chicken, rice etc cause bladder stones?

I just started feeding my maltese poodles/terrier a diet of brown rice, Chicken or canned Salmon, canned pumpkin, nutritional yeast, peanut butter, vegies (blended up for digestibility) and omega 3 oils etc. I, also, boil chicken breasts/skinless/boneless, then slice it and dehydrate for Chicken Jerky-to avoid the China jerky.
A woman said homemade chicken and rice caused her dog to get bladder stones. I am wondering about this, since most dog foods include what I feed mine. I give them some blueberries, too. I make their own biscuits, because I don’t want ingredients from China. Some manufacturers will say: Made In USA, but, you have to read somewhere else on the package to find: ingredients are from China. I don’t want to go to all of this work and give them bladder stones. What do you think?

I think you are wasting your money; almost everything on that list is food alien to your dog’s metabolism. I wouldn’t be surprised if it did compromise your dog’s health, but I’m not a vet, so I couldn’t say it would or wouldn’t.

The dog’s natural diet is raw meat on the bone, with some small amounts of organ meat. Try it. The dog will love it, the diet will help him teethe properly, satisfy his need to chew, keep his teeth clean and his feces innocuous.

The basic idea is to approximate a wild diet as closely as possible; raw meat on the bone and small amounts of organ meat [liver is most important, but also kidneys, pancreas, spleen, lungs and what is called green tripe].

Amount to feed is calculated as 2-3% of the dog’s ideal adult body weight. Most raw feeders that I’ve read have started their dogs on chicken: it is readily available and inexpensive, plus it is antibiotic- and hormone-free. The fat content is easy to control. After a week or so, spread out to pork, beef, turkey, duck, rabbit, goat, bison, ostrich… any meat available at the grocery store is fine as long as it is not spiced, smoke, brined or ‘basted’ (as whole turkeys often are).

Try it; it’s so much easier and less expensive than the complicated system you’ve described.

If you are a dog owner, you can try some trendy DIY dog food in spare time and your dearest pets may feel your love.

Chicken liver and maize flour

The first step is to wash chicken liver well and put some maize flour in a small bowl with some water. Put some water and liver into a steamer, cover it with a supporting frame, put the bowl on the frame and simmer it for about 10 minutes. (You can also cook chicken liver first, then braise the flour with microwave oven for about 2 minutes.) In this period, you can cut potatoes and other vegetables into pieces. When the steaming chicken liver is ok, chop it into small pieces and put them in a bowl. stir the flour, eggs, chicken liver together and add the tossed potatoes and vegetables. Such diet is suitable for the weak dogs who have bad appetite.

Pork or beef

When you decide to cook such food for dogs, buying some beef or pork, not mince. As meant mince is always made of bad meat, it will taste too greasy.

Here are the approaches:
First, fry the meat with a little plant oil or cook it with scalding water. Put some cornmeal into small pot with some water and put the meat into the pot till it boiled. You can add some chopping vegetables, such as cabbage turnip, potato, etc. Make sure the potatoes should be cooked first and add some salt into it. When the vegetables cook well, such dog food is well done. It’s rich in kinds of nutrients.

Chicken skeletons

Boil some chicken skeletons with a little water for about half an hour and add a small amount of maize flour into the chicken soup and cook for a while. Then tick off the left meat on the skeletons are chop into pieces and put them into cooking soup. The last step is to add some salt into the new meal.

Except from the listed above, you can cook some other DIY food that your pet dogs may love to eat. For some weak or wounded pets, the owners should cook some special food for them for sake of love and care.

Best Dog Food – Don’t Serve Your Canine Any Food Till You Learn This

Is there even such a factor as the very best pet food anymore? If you find yourself wondering about that, you are not alone. In gentle of recent occasions and exposés in the controversial pet meals trade, you can hardly be blamed for asking. But concern not; learn on to search out out more about selecting the most effective dog food to your greatest buddy.

First of all, keep in mind that it isn’t just humans who’ve a proper to contemporary food. All residing creatures have simply as a lot declare to it; and actually, canine have thrived for hundreds of years on pure meals—until pet food got here along.

Back in the 1930s, cereal firms and meat industries got here up with the thought to combine their rejected merchandise and sell them off to the unsuspecting public for added profit. These rejects were moldy grains and diseased offal, respectively, deemed unfit for human consumption by the US Division of Agriculture, but which these corporations determined to cross off as ‘pet food’ anyway.

Of all the world’s consumables, pet food is probably probably the most unnatural. In case you take the time to cease and skim the listing of substances printed on their labels, you’d be shocked. Most of it doesn’t even sound like food. And if you happen to knew what it’s that’s actually in your canine’s food regimen that you just feed him unknowingly, you would no doubt be sickened.

Oftentimes, pet food labels are deliberately misleading. The time period ‘meat by-products’ is generic and should not only include poultry and cattle however could very well encompass wild zoo animals, diseased carcasses, and even euthanized cats and canine!

And by saying ‘by-merchandise,’ it means all the wholesome consumable meat has already been stripped off for human use, in order that what your dog truly will get are bones, blood, feathers, pus, and who is aware of what other unmentionable physique parts are there.

The perfect answer for this is to simply cease shopping for into this atrocious excuse for pet meals and begin cooking do-it-yourself recipes for your canine cherished one. But not everybody has the time and means to do so.

Fortunately, there’s a handful of quality pet food on the market that’s slowly gaining recognition thanks to the recent mass pet food remembers that’s gotten each pet lover paranoid. They’re a bit pricier than the low-high quality kind, however they last more as canine eat extra of the cheaper brands in a single sitting. So you find yourself saving extra in the long term, and that includes veterinary payments for remedies since your pet stays healthy and happy.

You can inform which is the perfect dog food to your pet by wanting at the first {two} or three substances listed on the label. At the prime of the record needs to be a specific kind of meat, since canines need protein greater than some other nutrient. Meat meal is even better. Which means the water has been removed from the meat and what you’re left with is a more concentrated protein source. Look for components like rooster, rooster meal, turkey, turkey meal, lamb, lamb meal, fish, or fish meal. Eggs are also an excellent source of protein. Once more, do not fall for ‘meat by-products,’ ‘poultry by-merchandise,’ or ‘fish by-products’ as you never know precisely what these by-products are.

Secondary to protein, canine want carbohydrates. Look for simply digestible grains like rice, or other sources corresponding to potatoes. Avoid dog food that lists corn, soy, wheat, or gluten as the primary ingredient as most canines are allergic and can have digestive issues once these grains are ingested.

The perfect pet food uses solely healthful components, uses natural preservatives like nutritional vitamins C and E (ascorbate and tocopherols) instead of the carcinogenic chemical compounds BHT/BHA and Ethoxyquin, and needs no synthetic colours or flavors to make it palatable. Certainly, if the elements seem adequate so that you can eat, then you may be certain your canine will respect it, too.

Canned Canine Food – What Are The Advantages And What’s The Draw Back?

Have you been interested by including canned dog food to your dog’s weight loss plan however each time you choose up a can, your thoughts has a complete meltdown on the thought of trying to decipher the information on the label? Well, don’t surrender, as a result of reading and understanding those labels are an important step in making sure your feeding your canine proper and with a bit help you will get the cling of the labels and find the advantages of feeding canned pet food to your dog in no time.

Feeding canned pet food can actually have it is benefits to your dog’s health but it could even have a draw back relying on your canine’s personal needs. One of the first considerations is after all taste. In case you have a choosy eater, canned meals will likely be a particular plus as it’s generally very tasty. It could additionally hold health benefits in case you have a canine that is affected by kidney points as a result of canned pet food is excessive in water content material, so it will help your canine go to the toilet more frequently. Along those self same traces, it’s easily eaten because it is mushy and it is easy on the abdomen for these with digestion issues.

On the draw back, one of many major problems with canned meals lies with owning a larger canine breed. For those who dog requires a large quantity of food/energy each day, the quantity of canned meals required to satisfy that need goes to be large and expensive in comparison with a dry dog food diet. It’s also necessary to notice that canine’s that do not have any dry dog food or chew bones in their diet are going to wish regular dental care as a result of their tooth will not be getting cleaned properly with onerous foods. It is also potential that too much moist pet food can disagree with your dog’s tummy and trigger diarrhea.

As soon as you have thought-about the basic concerns of feeding your dog canned pet food, it’s essential to think about the actual substances of different moist dog food brands. This is going to require you to do some label reading. That is simpler than you suppose if you recognize what to look for. To begin with, establish a meals that is formulated on your dog based on life stage or size in keeping with the label.

Then it is best to start in search of a protein source or meat on the checklist of ingredients. Your meat source should all the time be one of the first three elements on the listing as a result of substances are listed according to weight, largest being first, therefore you will want your meat supply to be at the top. You need to know that you probably have a contemporary ingredient like hen as the primary ingredient it doesn’t always imply that there is a considerable amount of hen within the can. What happens is, there’s a substantial amount of water in recent chicken, this causes the weight of the chicken to go up. Nonetheless, if the first ingredient listed is rooster meal, then you know that the dog food accommodates a considerable amount of it.

When searching for your meat source, be certain it’s a whole meat source, not a thriller meat. Here are just a few of the statements that are used on pet food labels that may be misleading:

* With Hen Flavor – Flavor is detectable but does not need to have any precise Chicken meant present in the product
* With Salmon – The product incorporates no less than three% salmon. So when you purchase a product that says “now with actual beef” it could solely have 3% actual beef in it!
* Beef Dinner – The product should include at the least 25% Beef.
* Liver For Canine – No less than ninety five% of the product should be liver or 70% together with water

After you take a look at your meat/protein source, you could make sure the pet food has the opposite fundamental nutritional wants comparable to carbohydrates. The five basics of these vitality requirements are protein, carbohydrates, fats, nutritional vitamins and minerals.

1. Protein – Normally Meat – Should be roughly 20% of the food regimen
2. Carbohydrates – Rice, Corn, Wheat, Soy Must be approximately 50% of diet
3. Fats Approximately 9-15%
4. Vitamins – A, B, C, D, E & Ok Complexes.
5. Minerals – Calcium, Potassium, Sodium & Magnesium & Other Hint Components

Selecting to feed your dog an entire canned pet food eating regimen is definitely something it is best to analysis and focus on together with your vet earlier than beginning. Many canine professional recommend feeding both a dry dog food and canned meals eating regimen together to complement each other. The necessary half is to be sure you are feeding high quality pet food products and reading your pet food labels as a result of feeding your canine wholesome will be sure that they reside a high quality life and stay a longer lifespan.

Keep Meat Fresh Naturally

Meat is a highly perishable food item, so extra care and special attention are needed to make sure that you keep meat fresh so that it will remain a high quality, wholesome product. Spoilage and unwholesomeness of meat are caused by bacteria and other microorganisms. There are two different groups of bacteria that affect refrigerated meat. Pathogenic bacteria make us sick, whilst spoilage bacteria make our food go bad and make our refrigerators smell. By smell, sight and taste, you cannot identify whether meat contains pathogenic bacteria, unlike meat contaminated with spoilage bacteria.

In a refrigerated state, spoilage bacteria thrives. The fact that all food in a refrigerator eventually spoils proves this. Spoiled food doesn’t make you sick, it might taste bad but unless it contains pathogenic bacteria, your digestive system will be fine. Unrefrigerated meat, if left out on the counter for a few hours, might smell and look okay, but may be loaded with pathogenic bacteria. This contamination usually happens during cutting and processing. These bacteria require certain conditions to grow; a very low acidity level (near neutral pH) within the meat; a supply of water or other moisture, for example meat juices, or a warm temperature, usually somewhere between 45° and 127°F.

There are five basic meat types, each one requiring special storage techniques. They are cooked, frozen, fresh, cured and canned meat.

Cooked meats should be used within a week of preparation, or properly frozen and wrapped for use later.

Meat can be kept for longer periods of time if it is frozen at -10°F or below. After it is frozen, maintain the temperature at 0°F or lower. Most side-by-side and chest-type freezers can maintain this temperature while most ice compartments in refrigerators cannot, so it is not recommended to store meat in this compartment.

Try to limit freezer storage time on all meats to maintain their quality and freshness. Freezing meat won’t improve the quality, but it will retain its natural color, texture, nutritional value and flavor.

Refrigerate fresh meats at temperatures of 38° to 40°F for as long as possible.

Fresh meat should be stored in the coldest part of the refrigerator, this in usually towards the back, away from the door. If it is to be used within two days, leave the meat in its original wrapping. If it is to be stored longer, rewrap the meat in freezer wrap and freeze.

Cured, smoked, and ready-to-eat meats include bacon, ham, sausage products and smoked pork. The heat, processing and smoking of these items inactivates most enzymes and bacteria. These products should remain in their original wrapping to prevent any further contamination. After opening, most cured meat will stay fresh for approximately a week in the refrigerator and should be stored in airtight containers to prevent odors in the fridge. Luncheon meats should not be frozen.

There are two varieties of canned meat, some require refrigeration, like hams, and some don’t, like corned beef, chili con carne and dried meats.

Homemade dog food, help!?

Okay so I got kidney beans, eggs, brown rice, oats, hamburger, chicken, broccoli you name it. But how much of what do I put in? All the websites say something different and the math is killing me trying to figure it all out, like a pound of hamburger is 2 1/2 cups, etc….
Everywhere I read says give them some veggies like broccoli though….

Dogs don’t need beans, rice, oats, or broccoli.
Dogs can’t even digest plant matter unless it is pureed. Their digestive system simply can’t break down the cell walls of plant matter.

If you are willing to put in the time to prepare your own food for your dog, I suggest doing prey-model raw. Not only is it a better diet, it’s much simpler: 80% meat, 10% bone, 5% liver, 5% other secreting organs.
Here’s a good place to start getting information about it: http://www.dogster.com/forums/Raw_Food_Diet/thread/431875

ADD:
RE: “Everywhere I read says give them some veggies like broccoli though….”
> And everywhere you read says to gives supplements, too, correct?
First of all, cooking destroys nutrients. Secondly, dogs don’t get the nutrition from veggies and grains like humans do. In a cooked homemade diet, people try to replicate what humans would eat, and that’s not an ideal diet for dogs.
> A raw prey-model diet requires no supplements because the dog can get everything they need from the proper balance of raw meat, organ, and bone.
