Dog owners…What has been your experience with the tick-borne disease erlichea?

We just found out our dog has it while getting his annual heartworm blood test. He was not symptomatic. I’ve been researching it online, so I understand the pathophysiology aspect. But I’m wondering what types of personal experiences you’ve had with a dog who has had it? How long did they live after diagnosis? What was their quality of life? What kind of treatments did you use and what worked best? That sort of thing.

Had a bitch that had it when she was sent to me but it went undiagnosed by some rather dubious veterinarians for two years… she was in pretty sad shape when I recieved her and I fed her an excellent diet and she improved — then she would go through phases where she would slide backwards and loose weight even though she ate like a hog… then she was getting sicker and sicker and the dubious vets did testing and tried her on different things that they had tested and were normal but they didn’t have a clue… anyway, long story short, she was almost dead by the time a friend/vet tech said something to her vet about doing a check for tick borne diseases and voile, erlichia and lyme (two seperate diseases – both tick borne and both parasitic and lifelong). The reason she had suggested it was when they went to shave her stomach for spay surgery, figured we would get rid of a potential source of hormonal issues, she broke out in pitechia and she would have likely bled to death in surgery… she was not vWD affected – after a long and arduous course of antibiotics and treatment she recovered (was really touch and go) and is now spayed and in great weight and happy — her present owners know she has these issues and that they can arise at any time but they are willing to take that responsibility on and are keeping her in wonderful condition. It can ‘cycle’ throughout their lives with various situations so be aware if your girl starts to just ‘not look right’ so she can be checked — I agree with your vet though that at this point conservative approach is best and if he does have a problem with dealing with them due to some stressful situation, then maybe the can help with the medications. I would, if not alreay, have him neutered to prevent a potential stressor and the maintaining of immune system strength is important. The b*tch I mentioned is still very much alive and healthy and happy and has actually not had a relapse since the original fiasco – her quality of life is way better than mine! haha She has her own bedroom, maid and swimming pool

add: To the person whose dog has heartworms — they do not usually die at any time… not if they are not neglected and recieve veterinary intervention and heart worm treatment to end the infestation.

The celebrity vet Joe Inglis is one of many experts who have recently expressed their concern about the dangers to pet dogs of lungworm. How is the disease caused and what can owners do to protect their pets from it?

Animals can contract the condition through ingesting molluscs like slugs and snails, which can internally harbour the parasite, A. vasorum. The problem is caused by this organism even though it does not affect humans.

The blood vessels that lead to the lungs become infected as a result of the adult parasites making the heart and vascular system their home. A common result of this is a tendency to tire easily coupled with a chronic cough.

Some of the other symptoms can be an inability for the blood to clot and a general malaise and depression.

Provided that pet health care is obtained as soon as these signs are recognized, the condition is, Dr Inglis said, easily treatable. However, if left alone, dogs can deteriorate fast and sometimes die.

Some owners of pet dogs may assume that their three-month worming will kill off all parasites, including A. vasorum.However, this is not the case. The Bayer Animal Health initiative refers to the application of monthly preventative topical solutions but otherwise suggests elimination by a separate course of treatment.

By clearing up any dog mess, no matter whose dog was responsible, you can effectively reduce the chances of your pet becoming infected.

Dr Inglis also suggested that animal lovers make a concerted effort to ensure their pet’s toys and bowls are all brought back inside after a play session, to limit the risk of a mollusc climbing in or on to the object.

Education may be the key to cutting out lungworm – why not make a list of the possible symptoms and display it somewhere prominent in your home?.

If your pet dog starts showing worrying signs, this list will allow you to see in an instant whether or not it could be the result of infection by lungworm.

I am having a hard time getting her off of the Royal Canin she loves it I am feeding Natural Balance with it but she doesn’t seem to like it very much.

Wellness is a great food. My whole family has had great results with it. My 2 year old yorkie loves it and is thriving. As are my mother’s GSD and her 7 month old Airedale.

My yorkie is on the Chicken recipe but he LOVES chicken more than anything on this Earth. The Airedale and GSD are on the puppy recipe. I dont think the flavor really matters, just whatever your dog will eat. It’s a very good thing you are thinking about switching to a GREAT food.

Once you switch to a food you know your dog is getting all of the proper nutrients from, dont fuss over the food. Any healthy dog wouldn’t starve themselves. Even on Wellness, my dog will hold out for a treat when he gets hungry. But when he doesn’t get it, he will chow down on his food.

question about how to make lots of dog food for good price?????????

I have 14 rescue dogs and i feed them purina alpo. I know it sucks and i want to give them better food. Right now i can get 50 lb for $16 and that last for about 5 days. I am looking for a way to make them food that will be around the same price I’m paying. I tried chicken, rice, brocolli and carrots but it was $26 and only lasted 3 days. does anyone have any ideas or know of a store i could get better prices. also any sites that have coupons for high quality foods like innova, canidae, solid gold, etc. Thanks!!!!!!

I buy chicken quarters at .49 cents per lb from the Walmart supercenter and then get hearts and gizzards for about $1.29 per lb from the local grocery store.. I usually mix a lb of guts to ten lbs of chicken quarters and grind it all up with a meat grinder.. To that I’ll add about 8 egg yolks and a couple cups of water…
With cost being a factor, you could probably add either potatoes or rice, but, I don’t think it should comprise anymore then about 1/3 of the food.. You will want to cook and mash the potatoes though you’ll want to leave the meat and bone raw as cooked bone can be dangerous..
You may be able to find a cheap source for potatoes at a local farmers market. My parents pay about $3 for 50 lbs. I haven’t been able to find a source like that and it works out to about 40 cents per lb around here. So, for me it’s not worth it to not feed all meat..
If you’re using whole organ, there’s no reason to include things like broccoli..
Remember that a raw diet is a lot more nutritionally complete then a kibble, so you should be able to feed them much less of it. My dogs eat about the equivalent of a chicken thigh per day to stay at the correct weight. They’re about 30-40 lb dogs.
So, I pay about $65 dollars for 100 lbs of high quality dog food.. If you could find a cheap source for potatoes, you might be able to get by for less..
